Story / Historia

"We are arriving to the port, GET UP", my roommate Melissa said on the morning of Wednesday, September 1st. After 3 weeks of sailing along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, some whale and dolphin watching, many beautiful sunsets and ONE, yes just one Sunrise (because I never got up for more) there it was, Durban! Yes Land!! Finally! And it is surreal, the high rise buildings, the roads filled with cars driving on the "wrong" side of the road, and this humongous port as big as the city of Lome that we left behind. The AFM crew is on deck 7 and 8, waving at the workers on the port and taking pictures of our "new home".

On Thursday was the massive exodus. Over 150 crew members moved to "The Bosch" I wanna call it that (Appelsboch). So after millions of boxes that we had to carry and many bruises in my arms from the move, I go to my very own big room, with two beds and 4 closets! the Bosch is two hours away from the big bright lights of  Durban. The windiest road you can imagine, yes even windier than the ones in the mountains of Honduras, surrounded by many Zulu villages with puzzling circular houses, I still don't understand why their houses are round! I guess they really think outside of the box HA!! ok lame joke! anyways we are here, I miss being close to the city, my closest friends are gone, so it is a bit lonely, the good thing is that God and I are bonding, we watch "Dexter" and "The Office" together, read books while enjoying hot chocolate and chit chat.

I am trying to adapt to this new chapter of my story that God is writing. I read in a Don Miller book that for a movie to be epic, the character must want things that are very difficult to attain, the more risk, the better. And the second element is that this ambition has to be sacrificial, when a character sacrifices everything, even his own life for the sake of others, that makes an epic movie, an epic story. While I was reading this, my heart was jumping inside me and I wondered how epic of a story is the one I’m living, not just for my sake and my pride, but for God. Jesus lived the most epic story for me, so now I can do it for him and for others.

Sometimes our story take turns that we weren’t expecting and we are definitely not ready for it. These are the moments when we either become bitter or better. Bitter at everything around us, at God, at ourselves, we don’t deal with what is going on in our lives and believe somehow God is punishing us for some bad thing we have done, we run away, we hide, we pretend. Better when we understand God is a good Father and He will never do anything to harm us. Better when we view our situation and have the strength to ask for peace and comfort to give to those that need it. Better when we understand that the Big Man in the Sky is in control in some weird, inexplicable way and… we rest, we trust, we praise, we wait, but we also ACT upon what we believe.

I have been in both positions since I got to Africa. Yes! To your surprise I haven’t always been the “Halleluiah, praise God, missionary”. I have cried, complained, been stubborn, asked WHY, many many times, just because things are not happening the way I want them to, the little (or not so little) control freak in me sticks out and I listen to that voice. But God’s grace is so abundant, and his love so overwhelming, that in the those moments when I think my world is falling apart, He reaches down, hits my head a little so I react and brings me back to his arms. It’s a decision you make, someone said “the renewal of your mind”.

Mi abuela

My grandma is sick and in the hospital as I write this. My family and I are sad and worried, because that’s how it is, you hurt when those you love hurt. God has given me peace, and he has comforted my soul, and all of us are learning to trust him with this and we believe He is control. I ask that your prayers be with my Grandma and my family during this time. I am not bitter this time, I have decided to be better, and through that I am seeing God work in ways I was not expecting, and I am grateful. I hope you allow Him to write your story.

HISTORIA
