Aurevoir Lome!

After six wonderful months, the Africa Mercy lifted its anchor and we sailed away from Togo.  As we were getting ready to leave, the captain made the announcement and he prayed for this country and for our journey. His prayer was full of gratitude and love for this place; he said the words that were stuck in my throat, the words that my sadness did not let me express.

Tonight as I gazed up to the sky, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and enjoyed the Milky Way, the Northern Cross, the constellation of Cassiopeia, Jupiter, a UFO (it really was), and amazing shooting stars, I look back at what we left in Lome, and the lives that were touched, and changed by this big white floating hospital. So many stories, so many challenges, so much heartache, but even more beauty. Friendships that were made, on and off the ship, places we discovered, the things we learned, about others, about ourselves, about God and his wonderful mercy, his unconditional love and how He has chosen me, ME! The smallest of all, to be his servant, to be part of his perfect will.
Northern Cross
Togo has changed me, confronted me, surprised me. I have laughed, cried, danced, loved. There were times when I was ready to give up, and then the loving mercy of my Father gave me strength to keep going. Sometimes I felt lost, sometimes I felt I belonged, trying every day to remember that, even in those moments when I though I couldn’t go on, I am right where God wants me to be, and live up to the call I have received.

Thanks to all of you that support me financially, I couldn’t do this without you. May your generosity and kindness be rewarded, may God open the heavens and pour down his blessings over you. Thanks to all of you that are constantly praying for me, I can feel your prayers; I can see your prayers becoming real in my day-to-day life. Thanks for your calls, your emails, your Facebook posts, for taking the time to chat with me and talk about nothing and about everything. Know that when I’m at my worse I think about y’all and it brings comfort to my heart.

Today, I saw Togo for the last time, and South Africa is on the horizon. I don’t know what is waiting for me at the end of these two weeks of Atlantic Ocean, but I have great expectations. Today I realized, once again, that everything has an end, and that is good, because an ending is just an indication of something new, something different, and those endings and beginnings are what make us who we are, and no one can take away from us those real things that we have lived so intensely.
Taken when I was having dinner

I hope that in your life you leave “your Togo” with a grateful heart, even if it’s sad, then enjoy the majestic Ocean and the beauty and peace that it brings, and once you get to your new port, I hope you have an open heart to receive what is waiting there for you.

* More pics at the end.

Entrando a mar abierto

Togo me cambio, me confronto, me sorprendio. He reido, llorado, bailado, he amado.

FRAGILE

I got malaria! Awful! Can’t think of any other word to describe how bad I felt this past week! The pain has been terrible! During this time I came to the realization that we are very fragile creatures, and we have to give all that is in us to keep going through the trials. In sickness, it feels like you have nothing left inside, oh we are such physical beings. Surprisingly, every time my body is weak, is when my spirit grows strong! Wise man that Paul, (yes the Apostle)! The only inconvenience is that we need this body to accomplish certain things while on this earth. Oh that we could find the perfect balance! I believe that is our main task! But not only our body is weak, but also our heart is so vulnerable. One word, one look, one facebook post, ONE… and suddenly our heart sinks… again… we are just fragile creatures.

One of the best things I’ve understood, especially these past 6 days, is that God is holding me up. We always say we don’t want to let him down, but really that can’t happen, because He is the one holding me, and He never lets go. Even in my deepest, darkest hour, He is holding me, and if He wasn’t, then I will truly be doomed, in a much deeper and darker place, much worse than what I can possibly imagine.

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed”
2 Corinthians 4.8-9

So tell me again you’re strong! After one week of fever, unbearable pain, headaches and not being able to eat because to all of the above, I felt physically, emotionally & spiritually destroyed (remember? Fragile creatures, at least I am) and then it happened… “ Wait a minute, what are you doing? He is holding you, and He’s not holding you down… He’s holding you up, because He wants to take you higher every time…”

Malaria in Africa… checked! Still got a few other things to cross off my list while I’m here! Thanks for your love, thoughts, sweet kind words and for all your prayers! May you be abundantly blessed!

FRAGIL

Me dio malaria! Horrible!

Mondays / Lunes

Tuesdays through Friday are always busy. So many things to do in the HR department of the Africa Mercy, it’s unbelievable. But between the craziness of Lisa and Jo, time goes by fast and easy. The weekends are relaxing, usually around Lome, going to church, meeting people, getting to know the town and experiencing the African culture, and of course, trying every new food we can get a hold of.

Then there’s Monday. Saturday use to be my favorite day of the week when I was home, because I had nothing to do. I would get up really late (if you know me you know what I mean by late, I mean REALLY late) my mom would usually have “sopa de olla” and Itzel, Danny and I would complain about having soup every Saturday while we sat at the table with our pajamas on with a big bowl of it. That to me was a perfect day! Lay around in bed all day with my sisters watching movies and eating junk food.

I will not lie to you. I have some quiet days in Africa as well. Being in my room, watching movies with friends and eating popcorn. Those days are much needed in a place like this. For sanity and well-being! But, I’m sorry! I kind of left the thought hanging when I said, “Then there’s Monday”. Monday is the longest day of my week, it starts at 6 am and it ends as 8 pm, and is the day I anxiously wait for the other six. My alarm goes off at 6.25 am and after two snoozes of 10 minutes each I get up, put a skirt on, sometimes brush my hair, and I am ready to leave to the “Brigade Mineur” at 7.00 am.

The Youth Detention Center in Lome is a very special place. Not because of the place itself, it is actually not a place where I would personally choose to spend my mornings. One small, hot class room, surrounded by several “cells” that they call bedrooms, where around 30 boys and 5 girls between 13 and 18 years old, sleep in concrete beds with no mattresses. Two beds” in each room, 6 kids or more per room. Like I said, not a pleasant place. But did you notice I mentioned that there are boys and girls? They bring them here because they have done something stupid and they have to suffer the consequences. It is not a proper prison, but the government runs it. The kids have audiences with the judge and they have to pay for their sentence, and later on they are released. Depending on what they have done they stay from 1 up to 10 months.

These kids are special. Every morning we walk in there, they are excited waiting for us and greet us with a loud “BONJOUR”, all at the same time. They sit patiently while we share bible stories and bible lessons with them, they participate and are interested, even those that are from completely different religions. Sometimes we sing, they love music, we dance and have fun, we play games, cards, we joke around, we laugh, and for 2 hours every Monday morning, we fill each other’s hearts with love and hope.

There are many challenges. I wish we could do more for them. Some have been released on paper, but because they don’t have any money to pay the fee to the judge they can’t be free. “How much” You wonder? A ridiculous amount of $100.00 or less, depending on the offense. For others it is even harder, because they not only don’t have the money, but they don’t have friends or family to get them out of there. How my heart breaks for them, I can’t express, how I love them without knowing them well, I can’t understand, but when I close my eyes I see their faces and their smiles and sometimes their eyes full of sadness and loneliness.

Modest, Alexis, Komi, Titi, Tata, Michel, Melanie are some of the smiles God has given me this morning. How I wish I had the power the change the world and give these little ones a new life. I am begging you today to lift them up to the Father with me, to remember them in your prayers, to ask God to use us to touch their hearts and to love them unconditionally. Monday is my favorite day; it is on Mondays that the word PURPOSE becomes alive in my heart.

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners

Lunes

El Espíritu de Jehová el Señor está sobre mí, porque me ungió Jehová; me ha enviado a predicar buenas nuevas a los abatidos, a vendar a los quebrantados de corazón, a publicar libertad a los cautivos, y a los presos apertura de la cárcel;

Red Shiny Shoes / Zapatitos Rojos

I know you all have watched “Wizard of Oz”. Dorothy appears in this odd world and starts walking down the yellow brick road meeting some awesome, weird characters, and they are all on their way to find the wizard, so he can give them what they have always wanted. Oz is quite a scary place though, there are wicked witches and evil flying monkeys, so Dorothy and his friends are totally freaking out, but despite all this, they continue they journey and become stronger and braver because they have one purpose in their mind, to find this wizard.

What really strucks me about this story is Dorothy’s attitude. All she wants is to go home to Kansas. She has these cute red shoes that if she uses them will take her there. I have never been to Kansas and I don’t have anything bad to say about it, but “home” for Dorothy was this boring black and white place, with no friends and where tornadoes hit all the time. She was in this magical land of OZ, with colors, with friends, with adventures and challenges of course, but nevertheless, Oz was a place like no other. I wonder how much she missed out on because she kept thinking, “there’s no place like home”.

Don’t get me wrong, there really “is no place like home” because that is where what you love the most is, but home is not “where your heart is”, home is where your Maker has called you to be, because he has a purpose for you, for his ways are different than yours (Isaiah 55.8) and if you don’t accept this reality, you will become apathetic and indifferent with what’s going on around you and will not enjoy the ride.

While being in Africa I find myself thinking about home, yearning for my family, my friends, my food, and of course my Hershey’s (my dog). I found myself worrying about them, wondering if they are okay, if they are happy, thinking of all the things I could do if I was there with them, wanting to help them and comfort them when they need me. Sometimes I don’t trust God is in control, sometimes I forget Africa is my home, sometimes I don’t see the challenges as opportunities to grow, sometimes I put on my red shiny shoes and don’t enjoy the colorful world God has called me to live in. It is during those times that the abundant GRACE of my Father covers me and tells me that it is ok to miss my loved ones, to cry for them and to want to embrace them, but then he gently turns my face, on a Monday morning, to look at 16 kids in a prison, that are not wanted by their families, that feel lonely every second of the day, that are hopeless in their situation, and He tells me with his sweet, sweet voice “ “Dorothy”, bring them to me, I will give them a new heart”.

Wherever you are in your life today, stop longing for yesterday, throw away the red shiny shoes and enjoy where God has you. My prayer is that you wake up every day expecting something new, knowing that God’s mercies are new every morning, believing that you are exactly where the Father has called you to be.

Zapatillas Rojas

I live on a Ship/ Vivo en un Barco

Text Color

Living on a ship is very interesting. We are docked in the “Port Autonome de Lome” in the country of Togo. I actually live in a dockyard, not the nice area where the cruise ships stop, no, I live where all the other ships with cargo and containers are, not very appealing to tourists really. It takes me 50 seconds to get to work, 2minutes to get to the dining room, 30 seconds from my office to the bank, 10 seconds to the coffee shop and another 5 seconds to the only shop available, the ship shop! My living room is like 1 minute from my room and I have to wait in line like more than 3 minutes to get my food…so annoying! No traffic, no dust, no outside noise, it can be easy to forget you are in Africa, but I have to remember the bigger picture, my job is to help this huge vessel operate so that many lives can be touched through the many surgeries and programs exclusively for the African people.

Everyone on the Africa Mercy has an accent when they speak. People from so many different nations, (approx 35 countries) so many different cultures, it is confusing at times. My coworker Jo is from England, a very nice, funny girl with a British accent of course. Every day around 4.30pm, we are so tired that we don’t understand each other, her british accent, my Honduran English, it is great! We laugh and just now that we are tired and it is time to close our computers and go “home”, oh no wait, we actually live were we work, so hard to get used to this.

I have found friends; every day I meet somebody new. Nurses, all over the place, engineers, dining room stewards, cooks, office people, hospital admin, every and any profession. Musicians, poets, deep thinkers, athletes, comedians, entertainers, drama queens and kings. A mixture you don’t see very often.

And all of this is for the purpose of making a floating work, to bring healing and hope to thousands. We struggle, we enjoy, we have fun, we feel, we try to work together, sometimes it’s hard to put up with each other, but we are here because we love God… and nothing else.

"But me—who am I, and who are these my people, that we should presume to be giving something to you? Everything comes from you; all we're doing is giving back what we've been given from your generous hand. As far as you're concerned, we're homeless, shiftless wanderers like our ancestors, our lives mere shadows, hardly anything to us. God, our God, all these materials—these piles of stuff for building a house of worship for you, honoring your Holy Name—it all came from you! It was all yours in the first place! I know, dear God, that you care nothing for the surface—you want us, our true selves—and so I have given from the heart, honestly and happily. And now see all these people doing the same, giving freely, willingly—what a joy! O God, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep this generous spirit alive forever in these people always, keep their hearts set firmly in you" 1 Chronicles 29.14

He encontrado amigos, cada dia conozco a alguien Nuevo.

Jesus is African/Jesus es Africano

I know you've been missing my blogs! I have to! But things have been kinda crazy and it is hard to sit down ALONE and start writing. So for those of you that don't know yet, I arrived on the Africa Mercy in the port of Lome in Togo, a week ago. After having the most amazing experience in Benin which I shared in my newsletter (if you haven't gotten it please send me a message with your email).

The Africa Mercy is an awesome ship! There's always something happening, people around, it is like a small city! But I want you to be DULCE for the last month, so I will take you on a small trip to Africa and please picture this, try really hard to imagine yourself living my life.

" Cotonou, Benin, I can see the lights of the city from the plane I borded in Paris. My stomach turns, I am really here. When we landed, I didn't pay attention to the stewards warning of keeping your seat belt on and your carry on luggage under the seat in front of you, instead, I rushed down to my heavy back pack and got my journal out. I really needed to express what I was feeling and I didn't want to forget that moment, so I wrote this Feb 11 @8.50pm Africa time.." I'm in Africa! WOW!"...Honestly, there are no words that could possibly express what I felt. After a really hot time waiting for our bags we finally, officially are in African soil! and my heart wants to jump out of my chest, I think it stopped for a couple of microseconds, I was way to excited!

During those 16 days in Abomey, God confirmed his calling to this place, and I start meeting awesome people, being blessed by them, by their lives and their love. Oh how they love, how they give of themselves, everyone smiled, they are beautiful. I get up every day at 7.15am, skipping breakfast, I LOVE to sleep, and I'm not ashamed to say it. At 7.45am, devotional time, every day grabbing the guitar and sing, except for mondays, I decided 6 days a week was enough singing, my fingers hurt, so it was my day off! The days were hot, hot and hotter. They said that we would get use to it... LIAR! whoever said it! It was worse every day, a cool nap on the cool floor at the children's home after a nice sandwich for lunch helped! I ended every day completely worn out and then, back to the hotel.... no running water? again? Oh the advantages of being from Honduras! I taught my roommate how to use a bucket of water to flush the toilet and to take a shower! At night the A/C didn't work, (some nights) and while I'm not a fan of a/c, sleeping in a 90 degree weather... not my first choice. IT WAS GREAT! every single thing, the dirt, the heat, the lizards everywhere, the sun, the sweat, the exhaustion, I am absolutely loving every minute of it, I was born to do this.
After a really long day of travel from Benin to Togo, the Africa Mercy comes into view, my home for the next two years, I am freaking out! The ship was so cold and clean, I had forgotten all about that concept! and SOOOO many gringos!! Very confusing! No! I want the heat and the dust and especially my friends from Benin! A culture shock!

It's monday, time to go to work! So many things to do, so much to learn! Oh how easy it is to forget where you are and why you are here for. Change is hard, and transitioning to the ship was harder than I expected!

Tonight, Friday Night, the crew had a "HOEDOWN" party, to a latina that doesn't much, folk dancing??? whatever! I go to the dock and stay there in the hot sticky weather, watching them dance and laughing at my friends, then I start getting bored, suddenly something moves me ... "go down to the wards", the hospital and the patients are in the lower decks of the ship, in the dungeons...I went.

Amazing how your perspective changes in a split second! I walk in and the moment I see their faces God's peace, that surpasses all understanding, completely overwhelmed me! One of the guys from the crew was there with a guitar singing to the patients! It is perfect!

Today I looked into Jesus' eyes, I spoke to him in french, and "EWE" (dialect in Togo) I heard him sing,I sang with him, I asked the nurse to give him medicine because he was in pain after a face surgery, I danced with him while he was holding his baby with a clef lip in his arms. We laughed together. Jesus looks very african to me, a bit different from how I look, but his Spirit, presence, love, hope, grace is undeniable, I KNOW it is Him, He's here.

Today is a new beginning, with renewed strength, that's how the african people affect my life, they change me, they make my life worth living! From this day, every time I loose focus, I know that I just have to run to deck 2, and Jesus will remind me in french, or ewe, why I'm here, he'll say "Don't ever forget it... I'm African"."

Jesus es Africano

Se que han extranado mis blogs. Yo tambien!

Confuso! No!

Soy Africano"."

הנני

הנני is the hebrew for "Here I am", that has been the cry of my heart for years, my God is sending me!

One month ago I arrived in Texas, with an open heart and a teachable mind, to get prepared to go to Africa and serve the Love of my life through loving those that He loves. So, after many hours of sitting in a classroom, endless cups of coffee to stay awake, many hours of LOST , fun times with new friends and missing horribly all of those that are not with me, the time has come.

Tuesday February 9 is the day. I am, a five hour drive to Houston, a 10 hour flight to Paris and another 7 hour flight away from Benin and for my dream to begin. AFRICA, how in the world did I end up here? How did all this happened? Who's responsible for me going to this place so far away, that I don't know the language, and I don't know what's waiting there for me?? OH MY GOSH! Please don't ask me how do I feel now that the time is here, because I am feeling all the feelings that a person could feel! I am beside myself! I am so excited that I feel butterflies in my stomach, like when you're in love, I am so nervous that I shake every time I stop and think about it, I am so scared that I get goosebumps when I picture myself walking on those roads. But despite this mixture of feelings, there is a sense of purpose that I have never had before, to know you are in the center of God's will is a feeling like no other, to feel Him with me at every second, comforting me, giving me his beautiful peace that surpasses all understanding, I wouldn't trade this moment for anything.

Fourteen of us will arrive in Benin, the voodoo capital of the world,
on February 10, we will be there until February 26, and after that we will drive to TOGO where we will board the Africa Mercy. We need your prayers for this next three weeks. I won't have any internet access until Feb 26 when we get to the ship, so please remember me in your time with God. That we will have his protection at all times, that our team can work together as one, that his power and greatness may be shown through us, that we have divine appointments, that we can share his love, and that through us He may bring salvation and freedom. We will be working at an orphanage in the town of Abome so please pray for those little ones that we will be serving, that we can give all the love that's in our hearts to them.

Thanks for your constant support, I will see y'all in 3weeks and you will be able to enjoy with me all the awesome things that God has prepared for the us and the people of Benin while we work alongside them! Be abundantly blessed.

Sean bendecidos abundantemente!

Renovation of my mind

I survived the second week of Gateway!!!! At some point there I really thought I wasn't going to make it! I know that God held me up this week because of your prayers and I want to thank you for it, all those requests I had in my last blog, were answered last week. What an awesome GOD we serve!! It was a full week, Alicia spoke on God's character, Dean Sherman spoke on Spiritual warfare, and Nancy shared about prayer. We finished our week at the Tyler State Park with a silent retreat, 4 hours of being quiet and listening to God speak to our hearts. I know some of you are wondering, and yes, being quiet for all that time was very hard for me.

Who would've thought that your life can actually change in two weeks? that after 17 years of knowing God in a personal level he could stil reveal so much of himself in one week?
what? really? so you mean I serve a never ending God that is full of mystery and our little human minds can not even fathom everything he is capable to do? no way!! I thought I had all this figured out already! Our God is GOOD! He is a kind, loving, forgiving God! To know we have his nature, and that we are also meant to be like Jesus, has been so challenging for me. I don't have to wait to get to heaven ibe likey Jesus, I have to start now, and love and give of myself to others just as he did when he was walking on this earth. I said to love... LOVE, wow what that word means just changed my heart this week, and I found out how hard it if for me to love those that don't love me back. I am sure this doesn't happen to any of y'all , because y'all are so loving! But it so happens that I am not very loving because I judge others based on my own understanding, and I let satan blind me and bring conflict and I fight my family, my friends, my brothers and sisters, thinking it is their fault and blaming them for being mean to me and for not doing things like I do, and I don't even realize what the real reason for these strifes is. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" Ephesians 6.12. By nature I am a fighter and if I don't understand Satan is trying to bring conflict and create a division between me and those around me, I will start fighting THEM instead of fighting the one that causes this division. So what are we supposed to do? you might ask, "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Ephesians 6.13.
God is preparing me for this war, not only as I go to Africa, but in my daily walk on this earth. The greatest power He has given us to stop fighting each other and destroy satan's plan, is LOVE. "Love one another" " In this they will know that you are my disciples, that you love one another" "Love your neighbor as yourself" "Love is to lay down your life for your friends" "GOD IS LOVE". May we continue to pray against the forces that want to divide us, may we bring HIS Kingdom down to this earth, may we focus on what really matters to the Father's heart, may we LOVE.

NO!

First week of training

So my first week of training for Mercy Ships in Texas has finished. Oh how blessed and grateful I am!!!It was a learning time, very challenging in a lot of ways, and very rewarding as well. I can't believe how far God has brought me and it is really amazing to see how He works in so many different ways.

Of course leaving home was very hard, knowing that I won't be back for two years is something that stills breaks my heart, but I know My Father is in control of my family and He will keep my heart at peace as well. Somewhere in my head i thought doing all this "missionary" thing was going to be easy... I don't know how I came up with that one! It is harder than what I ever imagined! Everyting and everyone is new, and some of you that know me might say that I should have no problems with new things and new people, but it is not as easy to adapt and to get used to a life changing experience as the one God is taking through right now.

I am now trained to perform CPR, First aid, put out fires, and to survive if my ship ever sinks! but the training God is putting through it's so much harder than all this. He wants me to understand that it is all about HIM, that my pride is not gonna work, that it doesn't matter if I don't feel comfortable, that I shouldn't care if I feel alone, He actually wants me to die to myself so He can become my all in all. He's all I got!

This blog today is more a prayer request, so that I won't stand in the way of what God wants to do in my life and through me. For Him to give me strength and peace in everything that's going on around me, and that I never take my eyes off of my Lord, so he can use me to bring love and salvation to others. Be blessed!
