I did it My Way

I will have to borrow Frank Sinatra’s words to put in writing what I feel now that I leave Africa:

“And now, the end is here, and so I face the final curtain. My friend, I’ll say it clear, I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain. I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and every highway, and more, much more than this, I did it my way…”

Someone asked me, not too long ago, if I ever thought I was going to live in Africa for two years and work with an organization like Mercy Ships.  My response was, not only did I constantly think about it, but I dreamt about it, and more, I prepared myself for it.

What I didn’t know was how much my heart was going to be impacted and transformed during these two years. I didn’t know how much I could love and how much I needed to be loved. I was clueless about the hurting world and how much pain you feel when you can’t help those in need. I was unaware of my weaknesses and of how fragile of a being I am. I was also surprised by the strength that came over me when things around me were crumbling down.

I learned a new meaning of the cliché words “Gospel”, “Missionary” and “Ministry”.  I realized it had nothing to do with what I do, and they have everything to do with who I am.

Family, Friendships, Relationships, suddenly went to a whole new level I didn’t even know it existed. Felt loneliness like I never have before, and at the same time I never felt God and others closer.

Africa captivated me! The beauty of their people is evident even in their brokenness. I saw myself, my country in them. The pride in what they have, the love they are capable of giving, the hard work they do, the abuse they still have to put up with from the “white man”. Africa would be better off without the rest of the world trying to tell her what she needs to do, what she should look like, how they should work or how to worship. God’s name is in every inch of this continent, in every smile of a small child and in the deep eyes of their elders.  Oh how naïve of me to think I needed to come to Africa to “save” it, Africa has saved me!

Today I leave this land! Sierra Leone has given me one of the best years of my life. Africa took the worst of me and gave me the best of herself. Today my heart cries for this place, for the longing of it. My prayer is that I never forget how it smells, how it feels, how it tastes. I ask my God to bring me back , I ask him to bless this paradise!

Yes Mr. Sinatra, my life has been full, and no I didn’t do anything in a shy way, I did it my way. I laughed, I cried, I gave it all to this place and it’s people, but I’m not done. I close the Africa chapter today, for now, and a new one begins. And as I go, I go with the same words that brought me to this place two years ago… “Father, Here I am…”.

Africa me cautivó!

Four Sexy Grey Hairs

I woke up this morning and, as it is natural to my vain self, the first thing I did was look in the mirror to make sure everything looked good. Don’t really have anyone to impress you know, specially when you have been sick with malaria for the past week and live by yourself, in a pretty spacious room let me add, but still just wanted to make sure. As I was doing my morning assessment in the mirror, I found something that shocked me. They were new, hadn’t seen them before! Huh? When? How? Did everyone see them before I did? did it happen last week with the malaria.? Two new grey hairs! I already had two, I was very proud of them, I liked them very much, you know, the little bit of salt and pepper added to my really dark hair, it looks good. But now, two more, didn’t really know what to think of it.

I consider myself a very young soul. I wear converse shoes, I listen to hip-hop, I dye my hair purple some times, I almost broke my nose trying to learn how to surf, and still my favorite years are when I was in high school. Last year it was hard to accept I was turning 30, I couldn’t believe time had just flown like that, and now I can’t even get a student discount cause I’m too old! But this year I decided to make peace with the idea that I am over the hump! And it’s ok!

There is something that changed when I left my 20’s behind. I don’t think it has to do with the actual number, but this year life from my vantage point has been very different. I am becoming a new woman, with new dreams, or maybe old improved dreams. I have learned to enjoy every moment with the ones I love when they’re with me, because I never know when they won’t be there anymore. I laugh more, I worry less, I know God is more real to me now than ever before, I know how to enjoy a beer after a hot tiring day, thinking about the future is something that I like to do, I can see good in almost everyone, I am not afraid of almost anything. (except frogs) Maybe is my grey hair, don’t they say it means wisdom?

It’s nice you know, this new season, this new adventure I am about to start. I leave Africa in a few days, I go back to my beloved Honduras and I cannot wait to see what’s gonna happen. After trying to deny that I had 2 more grey hairs, I realized how good they looked! I now have four sexy grey hairs, and I’m happy, so happy that I can write about it today, and thank my Creator for these 31 years, the good the bad and the ugly. The times when I felt He wasn’t there, the moments when He proved me wrong. For all I have and all that I am, I’m thankful!

This is me Today!

 4 canas Sexy
